We are so blessed. There is no other way to describe it.
J turned 40 today. And it took some time to figure out how to celebrate. But when I thought about what was most important to him, to us, it was actually quite simple – family, friends and adventure.
The biggest challenge was that these things are mostly not where we live. So to throw a big classic party just wouldn’t feel right if our friends from around the world couldn’t attend. So instead, we’ve been going to them in many cases.
But for the big birthday present, I asked our friends and family to record short videos to send over….and I figured it would be a touching thing to see the faces and hear the voices that mean so much to him.
I didn’t expect to be so touched myself.
I didn’t realize how very much I miss these people in my everyday life. How funny and loving and amazing they all are.
These are videos made in closets hiding from the kids or at elevators on the way to busy days or on the floor at home after a long day. They are slices of the lives we are all living now. It doesn’t matter that many are a simple “Happy Birthday” from the whole family or an elaborate 8 minute reminiscing ramble.
I wonder how often any of us are capturing and appreciating the beauty of these little, mundane moments.
Because of this request that so many obliged me for, we got to see this beauty up close. We got to hit pause and replay, savoring the faces and the voices that we love dearly. We got to share the little moments with our friends again, if only across the span of a video.
And I feel blessed. Thank you for taking the time to do something that may not seem like much but means the world.
Here’s the the next 40 years of the little moments.
